SUBJECT: Wickliffe PTO Weekly - What to Watch for this Week (4.6.2021)

Facebook
What to Watch for This Week:

Hello Wickliffe families,

Here's what to watch for this week:

  • Our Spring Flower Sale is underway! Please place your order online at www.fundraiseit.org. All the details are in this flyer and below. All rewards and prizes will go directly to benefit our school (NO individual prizes will be awarded).
  • Adopt A Teacher/Staff Member: Thank you to everyone who has adopted a staff member this month! If you haven't yet, please take a minute to sign up.
  • Our April restaurant fundraiser will be at the Chocolate Café - mark your calendar for next Tuesday, April 13th! All day, from 9am-9pm, 20% of all orders of breakfast, lunch, dinner and sweet treats will benefit our school when you mention Wickliffe. See this flyer, and below, for all the details.

Please scroll to Counselor's Corner for the counseling team updates and to read Dr. Kassoy's Food for Thought. This week Dr. Kassoy shares an article that explores the topic of finding hope in a hopeless time - with so many COVID restrictions still in place, remaining hopeful can be challenging, and this gives us some new ideas to help us build hope and support our families.

The weather is warmer, the kids are shedding layers, and the school lost and found is bursting at the seams! All the lost and found items will be on the coat rack and tables outside the school entrance this week, ready for collection. Please stop by or have your children claim what's theirs!

And finally, please check our calendar below for other important dates - including the online academy learners meet up today (4/6) at 4:15pm, the school town meeting zoom is on Friday, plus the UA school district survey for online learning for 2021/2022 closes at the end of this week (4/9).

Have a great week,

Kelley Swiney and the whole PTO

Adopt A Teacher/Staff Member!

We want to show the teachers and staff at Wickliffe how much we appreciate all of their hard work and support during the school year! We invite you to sign up and adopt a teacher or staff member for either a month or for the rest of the school year. Up to 3 families can sign up to adopt the same teacher/staff member.

During the time you have adopted the teacher/staff member let them know that you are thinking about them! Send them encouraging e-mails, mail them a card, drop off a small treat at the Front Office, etc.

You do not need to spend a lot of money adopting the teacher/staff member just let them know you and your family are thinking about them and are thankful for all of the hard work!

Sign up to adopt a teacher or staff member
The teachers/staff members completed a survey about their likes, favorite candy, etc. Click here to find out more about your teacher/staff member.

Daily Symptom Checks

Dr. Imhoff shared this message from our school nurses, on the symptoms to watch for before sending our students to school each day:

  • Daily symptom checks: Please continue to conduct a daily symptom check at home for any symptoms related to COVID-19 —  fever of 100.4ºF or higher, chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore threat, new or worsened nasal congestion, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. If your student is experiencing any of these symptoms, please keep them home, and you may call your school nurse, Janice Walsh, for advice.

For more information, the UA school district's responsible restart webpage is here.

Counseling Team Updates

Two important items for this week...

  • Hey Online Academy Friends and Learners! We apologize for the late notice, but we have been watching the weather so that we can pick a nice day for some outside fun!  So, today, Tuesday April 6th from 4:15-5pm we will meet outside at the big toy for some Online Academy screen-free activities!  Join us for sidewalk chalk, bubbles, hula hoops, and popsicles treats! We hope to see you then!

  • For those of families who have had older children, you are probably familiar with the YES Program. After almost forty years of presenting this workshop to our K-5 children, the elementary school counselors have designed new lessons.

As the world changes, so do the safety needs of our students. To ensure that our programs reflect the current research, data, and statistics, we consulted with Dr. Julie Harmon, founder of IMPACT Safety, to discuss the current literature surrounding safety for young children. Julie guided us towards KidPower.org which ultimately led us to Jayneen Sanders and her most recent publications on body safety.

We are pleased to be teaching these new lessons during the month of April for all students. Please look for a handout in your student’s backpack with resources and ideas for continuing this important conversation.

Dr. Kassoy's Food For Thought

Emerging from the pandemic seems to be in the forefront of our minds. With so much work yet to be done and many COVID restrictions still in place, remaining hopeful can be challenging.

Although this article was written for educators, I think there are many helpful takeaways for parents and caregivers. Nora Fleming embedded many scholarly articles in her writing to demonstrate that the concept of hope and its impact on youth is supported by evidence-based research, not her opinion. Though I have not read each of the articles, the ones that I did read illuminated the concepts that she was discussing.

As always, I hope that this article validates something that you already know about or are doing with your children with respect to building hope as we emerge from this pandemic. Or perhaps, it gives you some new ideas or insights about how to support your families.

Until next week,

The Counseling Team (Felice, Rebecca, Megan, Jihyeon, and Syd)
