SUBJECT: Wickliffe PTO Weekly - What to Watch for this Week (11.17.2020)

Facebook
What to Watch for This Week:

Hi Wickliffe families,

This week, we have our November restaurant fundraiser - don't cook on Wednesday! Instead, head to City Barbecue on Henderson for lunch or dinner, and they will donate 20% of the proceeds to our school, when you use the coupon code FundA at checkout online, or show the cashier this flyer.

We're excited to announce we'll be having our Fall Scholastic Bookfair online, from November 30 to December 13. Save the date, to stock up on new reading material and holiday gifts.

Take a minute to read Dr. Kassoy's food for thought, she has some great advice on limiting news consumption in the presence of our kiddos, and she gives us a fun activity to prompt children to notice what and whom they're grateful for.

Finally, check the calendar for other important dates and links, including the Board of Education meeting and the whole school town meeting via zoom.

Have a great week,

Kelley Swiney and the whole PTO

Counseling Team Updates
  • I wanted to remind everyone to please limit your news consumption and adult conversations in the presence of your kiddos. With a constant barrage of information about the increase in COVID cases and the ongoing coverage of the election results and transfer of power,  we need to be a source of calm and reassurance for our children. At a time when children are worried about the things that they cannot control, reminding them of the importance of mask wearing, handwashing, and social distancing empowers them to make choices about things they can control. As always, please reach out to us if you have any questions or need additional support.

  • Please join us on Sunday evening, December 6th, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM https://zoom.us/j/7191866057 for our next Parent Coffee. This conversation is entitled, “Navigating the Holidays.” As we know, staying connected with our Wickliffe families is more important than ever. We hope you can join us for this discussion.

  • Online Academy MeetUp - Please have your OA learners join us for a Holiday Hangout on Thursday, December 3rd from 11:00 to 12:00 on Zoom  https://zoom.us/j/7191866057 for games and a craft.  All your child needs is 6 pieces of paper (any kind will do), a glue stick, and their imagination. It is a great way to stay connected with each other while learning apart.

Dr. Kassoy's Food for Thought

As we approach Thanksgiving (and especially this Thanksgiving), gratitude is something that comes to mind. According to the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s website for their Making Caring Common Initiative...

“Gratitude is a process that unfolds into action by noticing what or whom to be grateful for, thinking about why one is grateful, and feeling positively about the experience of gratitude (Hussong et al., 2018). Although it is common for parents to focus on what their children should do to show gratitude (for example, to “say thank you”), it is also important to guide them to experience gratitude through noticing, thinking, and feeling (Hussong et al., 2019). This activity can prompt children to first notice what or whom they’re grateful for and to think about why they’re grateful. Parents [can] also share or talk about their own experiences with gratitude. Younger children may find it difficult to fully understand why they’re grateful, or what it is that someone did for them, but by listening to their parents talk about their own experiences of gratitude, they can come to understand and appreciate what it means to think about someone else, which is an important aspect of being able to feel gratitude (McCullough, Emmons, & Tsang, 2002).”

I am going to give this a try with my granddaughters, Bea and Tillie.  I hope you might do this, as well.

Onward,

The Counseling Team (Felice and Rebecca)
