What to Watch for This Week:

Hello Wickliffe families,

Today is Election Day, so NO SCHOOL today - happy voting!

This week, our beautification committee is continuing their hard work on the fall cleanup. They have done a fabulous job, including clearing and creating a new nature playscape for our students: a HUGE thank you to to Marta, Steph and Nichole and to the families who volunteered with them, and donated play items. It's not too late to get involved, please come and paint the fence on Friday 4-6pm, Saturday 10:30am-12:30 and Sunday at noon-2pm.

Also on Sunday, Dr. Kassoy is hosting an on-line academy meet up (at 4pm) and a parent coffee zoom (at 6:15pm) on the topic of 'families and teachers as co-educators; what does this mean in a pandemic?' See below for all the details.

We are continuing to provide teacher appreciation snacks to show our support to our amazing teachers. We have added new slots to the sign-up genius here, please consider signing up.

We have a few reminders:

  • our next restaurant fundraiser is at City Barbecue on Henderson Road on November 18th.
  • don't miss the Square 1 Art deadline, our online academy students need to submit their artwork for Square 1, by November 10th.
  • plus, as you begin your holiday shopping, please consider using Amazon Smile and Shutterfly storefront to benefit our school as you shop.

Our sponsor spotlight is on Junior Explorer Club, thank you for generously sponsoring our PTO.

And, check out Counselor's Corner for some great strategies and graphics from Dr. Kassoy, for engaging children in civil discourse.

Warmly,

Kelley Swiney and the whole PTO.

All forms need to be completed by November 10. Once submitted to Square 1 Art, students' art will be printed on stickers and delivered to the school. Families will then have the option to purchase products with their child's artwork.

Dr. Kassoy's Food For Thought

Raising social consciousness by encouraging the school community to examine and act upon complex issues within a democratic society is one of Wickliffe’s Foundational Principles. In addition, at the heart of Wickliffe are our 3 C’s...community, compassion, and civility.

As we prepare for returning to school on November 4th, we wanted to give you some tools to talk with your children about civil discourse in a developmentally appropriate way.

As always, you know your kiddos best. Please let that be your guide for your conversations at home.

What is Civil Discourse?

  • Civil discourse can be written or spoken communication in which there is a mutual expression of views or opinions without judgment or repercussions.
  • Involves effective communication and active listening
  • It is important for students to learn about developing practices that allow them to be good listeners, to evaluate one another’s beliefs and values, and to embrace empathy, civility, and acceptance.
  • Engaging in civil discourse means bringing your mind, heart, and conscience to reflective conversations on topics that matter.

Here are two different infographics that can teach children how to be active listeners.

And here are a few ideas for how to engage in civil discourse:

Please reach out to us if we can support your or your children.

Onward,

The Counseling Team (Felice, Rebecca, and Brittany)
