Teacher Appreciation

The teachers have been so touched by our gesture of snacks and drinks as little "thank yous" and a quick pick me up, over the first week of remote learning that we want to keep it going, while our teachers are diligently teaching our children remotely!

If you would like to contribute prepackaged food and drinks, our amazing teachers really appreciate them. Favorites include: sweets and salty snacks (e.g. candy and chips), and for drinks - soda, San Pellegrino flavored water, La Croix, cold brew coffee.  Really anything that you'd like to donate. Please drop your items to Kelley Swiney's porch at 3942 Newhall Rd.

Join the PTO

Please become a member of the Wickliffe PTO! Our hope is that every Wickliffe family will join the PTO this year. By joining the PTO, you are opting-in to:

  • access the school directory to help connect with other families in your child's class
  • communications on the many programs and activities the PTO provides throughout the year for our awesome Wickliffe families, teachers, staff, and students
  • an easy way to contribute to the PTO fundraising efforts - the fee is $25 per family for the year.

Joining the PTO is NOT a commitment to volunteer (although you are always welcome) or to attend PTO meetings (if you do, we would love to hear from you).

To join, please complete the PTO Membership form: 2020/2021 PTO Membership Form

If the $25 fee is a barrier to your family joining, let us know by contacting us at wickliffepto@gmail.com and we have you covered.

Counselors' Corner

Hello Wickliffe Families,

I am excited to connect with you through PTO this year. Each week I will provide updates on ways the counseling team is supporting children and families. Then, I will provide resources that will help all of you navigate school, parenting, and COVID.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me (fkassoy@uaschools.org.)

Until next week,

Felice, Brittany and Rebecca (my two fabulous interns)

Counseling Team Updates
  • This week we look forward to meeting all the new 1st- 5th graders. On Friday at 12:00, we will have our New Student Lunch Zoom https://zoom.us/j/7191866057. If your child is new to Wickliffe, we look forward to eating lunch with them on Friday and engaging in some fun “getting to you” activities.

  • And a special thanks to the Wickliffe Online Academy parents who joined us last week for our Brainstorming Zoom. It was great exploring ways to stay connected. If you were unable to attend, we welcome your thoughts and ideas. Details for our first Wickliffe Online Academy Meetup will be included in next week’s newsletter.

Dr. Kassoy's Food for Thought

As we prepare for our hybrid return to school, some parents have wondered about talking with their children about wearing a mask. Below is a brief article from Nationwide Children’s Hospital sharing some tips for having this conversation: Helping Kids Get Used to Seeing and Wearing Masks

In addition, here is a short Sesame Street video that might be helpful for our younger children.

https://www.weareteachers.com/social-distancing-videos/

How Can I Talk to My Child About Why People Need to Wear Face Coverings in Public?

For older school-aged children, try focusing on the positive behavior of “keeping our germs to ourselves.” Let them know that we all have many germs in our body and only a few kinds are the ones that make us feel sick. “When we wear a mask, we are trying to keep our germs to ourselves to keep everyone healthy.”

If they ask about why this is starting now, you can let them know that we are all doing our part to keep germs from spreading.

  • Steer clear of using scary language or frightening images of what might happen if masks are not worn.
  • Give them time to look and ask questions. It isn’t nice to stare, but having them look away and avoid talking to others can contribute to negative associations with masks and increase negative associations with wearing them.
  • Ask if they have any questions, even if you have already talked about it.

Older children may also be able to tell you about things they already do to help stop the spread of germs, such as washing hands, sneezing into their elbow and cleaning frequently touched surfaces - they can add wearing masks to the same list.
